Venous disease and chronic venous insufficiency can present with a variety of signs, symptoms and complications. Varicose veins are often the first changes visible on legs. If left untreated they can develop complications as a result of venous stasis and clot formation, or progress to advanced skin and subcutaneous tissues changes of chronic venous disease. Occasionally, diseased veins can bleed spontaneously or with only minor skin contact or trauma.
Importantly some patients can have significant symptoms of CVD with or without any visual disease. Many of these symptoms are worse towards the end of the day. Common symptoms include:
- Leg aches, cramps or heaviness
- Leg-tiredness
- Leg oedema
- Itching or tingling of the skin
- Restless leg syndrome
